WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (PRIME) -- U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Ron Johnson warned about the risk of fatal and destructive sanctions against Allseas, company building Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2, according to a text published on Cruz’ website late on Wednesday.
"We understand that Russia is paying Allseas a very substantial amount of money to complete the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. However, the consequences of your company continuing to do the work -- for even a single day after the president signs the sanctions legislation -- would expose your company to crushing and potentially fatal legal and economic sanctions," the statement read.
The U.S. Senate approved on Tuesday a defense budget, including spending on counteraction to Russia in various areas including sanctions against Nord Stream-2.
The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom is implementing the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, Austria’s OMV, and France’s Engie.
